Bethany revisits her nursery as an employee

Congratulations to Bethany Humble, who has taken her first steps into her childcare career with Selby Cottage, revisiting the nursery she attended as a child, now as an employee!

After leaving school with various GCSE’s including Health and Social Care and Drama, Bethany spoke to a careers advisor to discuss her options. Bethany had always wanted to work with children due to her friendly, upbeat and creative attitude towards life, and found that a childcare Apprenticeship would suit her just right!

Looking for various options, Bethany looked for a nursery in her area that could provide her with an opportunity. After speaking with Selby Cottage Childcare Centre where she once attended as a child, the managers at the centre opened an opportunity for Bethany, who then contacted NCT to deliver the qualification. Bethany then found herself a placement as a Childcare Apprentice, completing her Level 2 Apprenticeship/Diploma in Children and Young Peoples Workforce.

Bethany said, “I love my Apprenticeship here. I’m a very outgoing and bubbly person, so working with the children brings the child out in me.  I’m always kept on my toes working with them!”

Completing various activities throughout the nursery, Bethany works with the ‘Busy Bee’s’ group, taking the children from school to the nursery, preparing their snacks, liaising with parents and working with the children to help explore the world and their interests.

Apprenticeships are an excellent way to build your confidence in essential work skills while doing on the job learning. Bethany commented, “Managing my time is something where I feel like I lack confidence in, but the apprenticeship programme allows me to develop this skill with experience.

I feel like I’m benefitting way more now than I would be if I were to go to college, or go to university to study childcare.

If I were to apply for other jobs after completing my apprenticeship, I feel like I wouldn’t struggle, as I will already have the qualifications and experience to put on my CV.”

After completing her Level 2 Apprenticeship/Diploma in Children and Young Peoples Workforce, Bethany hopes to develop further into higher levels of the childcare qualification, or complete a teaching qualification to work with older students in schools while teaching one of her favourite subjects, drama!

Congratulations Bethany, NCT wish you every future success in your career in childcare!
