Apprenticeship Overview Level 2 Childcare Apprenticeships

This Level 2 Childcare Apprenticeship is a good starting point for those working or wanting to work with children, under supervision (e.g. pre-school assistant, nursery assistant). This intermediate apprenticeships will allow you to develop knowledge and skills relating to the Children and Young People’s Workforce. You will be required to demonstrate competence within your chosen area of the children and young people's workforce and will therefore be required to be employed within the sector. Job titles include Early Years Assistant, Care Worker or Assistant Youth Support & Community Worker. Who The Apprenticeship Is For

Level 2 is aimed at learners who are working, or want to work, in early learning, childcare, social care, learning development and support services. 


What Will You Learn

Apprenticeship Content

This intermediate qualification will prepare you with the essential skills to work with children and young people.

Mandatory units include:

  • Child and Young Person Development
  • Safeguarding the Welfare of Children and Young People
  • Understand Partnership Working in Services for Children and Young People

You will also choose an additional unit within the optional unit bank. These can be tailored towards children with learning or behavioural difficulties.

Employee right and responsibilities (ERR) will be delivered through an ERR unit which will ensure that the Apprentice knows and understands each of the nine national outcomes for ERR.

Learning Methods

You will be assigned a qualified training advisor, where learning will be undertaken by mixture of 1 to 1 sessions, group sessions, on/off the job learning and mentor support.

Assessment Methods

The course will be assessed via a range of methods which could include direct observations within a classroom or nursery setting, written/electronic portfolio, guided discussions and assignments.

Progression Opportunities

It is expected that you will progress, either onto the Advanced Apprenticeship pathway or onto the Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce as a stand-alone qualification. This will ensure that, as a practitioner, you meet the appropriate level of competency, as determined by registration and regulatory requirements.

Career Opportunities

Progression to Level 3 or Advanced Apprenticeship will also enable you to move to higher levels of work or enable you to work unsupervised. Roles include Nursery Supervisor, Childminder and Foster Carer.


Entry Requirements

Requirements

You should have an interest in working with children and should be suitable to do so as it is a requirement to undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

You will be required to demonstrate competence within your chosen area of the children and young people's workforce and will therefore be required to be employed within the sector. If you’re not currently employers, NCT’s Learner Engagement Team can help you find an employer.

You need to have been a resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the past 3 years and should be at least 16 years old.

There are no formal qualification entry requirements in order to access the framework, but learners must complete Functional Skills qualifications for Level 2 (or equivalents) in order to successfully complete the framework.
