We are currently recruiting for Home Care Assistants to work out in the community across the North Tyneside and Sunderland Area to provide:

  • Personal Care incl. washing, bathing, toileting
  • Meal preparations
  • Medication
  • Domestic Tasks incl. Shopping, laundry, cleaning
  • Escorting and enabling
  • Prior to your guaranteed job interview, you will be required to attend a 10 day funded training course for a BTEC Level 2 in Adult Social Care and complete an application form.

All successful applicants are provided with 3 days fully paid induction training, free DBS, free uniform, receive paid shadowing. If successful and after the probationary period you will be enrolled onto the modern apprenticeship and key skills.

Post Title: Home Care Assistant
Department: Older People’s Services
Responsible to: Home Care Manager/ Assistant Home Care Manager/ Patch Manager
Court Managers /Care Co-ordinators /Care Supervisors
Purpose of Post: To provide independent living and enable service users to live in their own home by providing personal care and practical assistance.

Key Tasks:

Monitors and reports to the Manager any changes in health and social circumstances of the service user and assists the Home Care Manager to assess the needs and review the services provided.

Assists the service user with personal needs where necessary and appropriate e.g. getting up in the morning, washing / bathing and dressing; helping with undressing and getting to bed in the evening.

Provides assistance with household and domestic tasks, e.g. laundry, shopping, cleaning, and financial transactions such as paying bills.

To make meals, drinks and snacks where necessary.

Assists with toileting needs including in some cases catheter bags, changing clothes and bed linen where necessary. To empty and clean commodes, wash and iron clothes and bed linen where necessary.

Encourages and enables service users to follow agreed care plans.

Keeps care managers, the service and key agencies informed about the well-being of service users and the progress of the care being undertaken.

Attends staff meetings and supervision sessions with managers.

Responds to requests from service users, or direction from Managers to escort service users in order to facilitate contact outside their own home.

Attends appropriate training as is necessary to carry out the duties of a Home Care Assistant.

After appropriate training to comply with the Manual Handling Legislation.

To work in accordance with Health and Safety procedures including the use of protective clothing.

In consultation with the Manager remind service users to take medication if necessary.

To be aware of the appropriate action to take in case of an emergency.

Provides basic factual information, verbally or written to the Manager about day to day events in the caring of service users.

Records all visits on a daily basis to the service user’s home in the service users note sheets.

To work at all times in accordance with the employers aims, values and policies and procedures.

Works to a Quality Assurance System which promotes a reliable and flexible service, appropriate to the changing needs of service users.

Promote, respect and uphold the dignity of service users at all times. Participate in and actively support activities to promote the dignity of service users, their families and carers.

Undertakes any other duties in line with the basic objectives of the post.

Responsible for own Health and Safety, ensuring a safe working environment for colleagues.

Special Requirements: To work shifts, weekends and bank holidays as required. Will be required to work flexibly to meet the social needs of the service.

Home Care Assistant Person Specification
Qualification And Experience
  • Caring experience either in a professional or personal capacity
  • Good general level of education, including basic reading and writing skills
  • Commitment to undertake necessary further training, including NVQ Level 2
  • Experience of caring for older people with dementia / mental health problems (desirable)
  • Qualification in care such as NVQ Level 2 (desirable)
  • Driving licence and daily access to car – applies to Home Care Assistants working in the community only and also depends on the area / patch allocated (desirable)
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work on own initiative without direct supervision
  • Ability to undertake manual handling tasks
  • Ability to keep calm in emergency situations
  • Ability to handle all types of food including fish, meat and poultry - applies to Home Care Assistants working in the community only (desirable)
Knowledge
  • An understanding of the needs of older and/or disabled people
